A little over a decade later Charles II arrived in England and was greeted by tens of thousands of citizens screaming "We love you Charles! We'll do anything you say!", most of which had multiple weapons, and it scared him half to death. He couldn't forget that these same citizens had executed his father. He commissioned a study. The anonymous author said "the power that brought in may be cast out" and that no prince could be safe "where Lords and Commons are capable of revolt" and that it was essential to disarm the populace and establish a professional army. He convinced Parliament to pass acts to disband their armies and turn in their weapons "for his majesty's service", and a loophole in the Act allowed the King to commission as many men in his personal army as he liked. When Parliament delayed in paying their militia for police actions (patrolling and grabbing criminals), the King immediately took up the reigns, and turned the militia from a lazy bunch into a group that had to be ready within an hours notice, and paid extra for any information about anyone who was disloyal to the King or was stockpiling weapons. With his 'police' force in place, he passed a few quasi legal laws to tighten gun control, forbidding the carrying of arms in London, and a registry of all firearms sold or manufactured to be given to the King weekly. Within a year all men of "evil principles" had been disarmed and were under surveillance. Endless alarms of plots were advertised by the King, which convinced Parliament to give even more control of arms and militia and army to the King. He used a few acts like the Game Act and the Militia Act to disarm his Whig opponents and then James II used it to disarm Protestant subjects. The Militia Act in particular had wide latitude to disarm law abiding citizens, and resulted in wholescale abuses. It took William of Orange to send James II fleeing, and the 1689 Bill Of Rights to set this right.

I am well aware that old age and treachery will always beat youth and exuberance, but I'm much closer to being an old guy than a young guy.

Funny enough, 8432 was my childhood phone number - and you didn't even need to dial anything else so long as you were in Westsyde... so I'm not all THAT young.

It doesn't matter whether the gun they have is illegal or not they don't care about laws in the first place. You could make every gun illegal and you would still have these guys armed to the teeth it's not laws against guns we need laws against criminals !

I'm old enough to remember party lines. Each house on the block had it's own ringtone. If you went to make a phone call you had to make sure someone down the block wasn't using the phone. And maked sure you didn't answer on someone else's ringtone.

Ha ha! I remember them too. My best friend lived out of town and I often spent the weekend at his place so we could go hunting. At the time, I remember asking why nobody answered the phone...party line.
Magua took the hatchet to colour with blood...It is still bright.

Everybody answered the line, they just did not say anything.

This is how everybody got to know everybody else's business in rural settings.
