    WRA Garand stock refinishing

I found a WRA garand stock for a decent price. It was pounded pretty badly, so considering the condition, I don't think I did too bad restoring it. I may strip it again if I get a bee in my bonnet.

Looks like it's still impregnated with oil. Clean it with any wood cleaning product like Murphy's Oil Soap. Dents will come out with a wet, but not dripping face cloth and an iron. Keep that away from the cartouches though.

Pure tung oil. It cleans and preserves at the same time. A little goes a long way.

Pure tung oil is fabulous stuff, but it doesn't clean. Pure tung oil gives a hard, waterproof, finish that keeps everything else out. Including any further attempts at staining. Brings out the grain of wood nicely. A litre runs about $20 in Home Depot these days. Minwax(not the only brand and the brand makes no difference) makes it. Mind you, they make Tung Oil Finish too and that's not the same thing.
Read this. Best article I've ever seen about Pure Tung Oil. Talks a bit about BLO vs Tung oil too.
