A rather pricey option at the time.
As for wondering, those sights normaly became rock solid when the action is cocked. A cocking piece sight was rather common during the turn of the century on your "better" rifles. Many rifles that this type of rear sight also came with the option of double set triggers which was very popular on european rifles but was not very popular with north american rifles. Go figure.
